I have been helping our my triathlon team mates by taking a series of photographs which they might be able to use to gain publicity and sponsorship. The team is Team Tri UK and is sponsored by the store of same name which is the largest Triathlon shop in the UK.
Within the photographs I took there were a number where I caught the subjects unawares - the resultant images display a much more interesting take on their individual personalities - ranging from confident to uncertain, from relaxed to nervous and from open to closed etc..
On reflection this photoshoot offered much more opportunity than I had imagined. With hindsight I might have devoted more time to creating a standardised approach to the aesthetic, eg framing, lens selection, consistency in scale etc. Also I ought to have started the session by asking the subjects to relax and get comfortable without directing them as I did. For example by asking them to put their hands behind their backs I eliminated an interesting element of body language - what to do with the hands. By adopting this approach I would most likely have produced a more interesting and revealing set of portraits than a simple set of PR photos.
Below is a sample of the work from the shoot. To create a standardised presentation I have edited the files in Photoshop. The portraits work well individually and collectively they invite comparisons between the individuals and reinforce the team identity through the uniform. I hope to develop this idea further. I have ambitions to produce a body of work based on portraits of Ironman Triathletes....more of this later I hope in Level 3.
